Do you mean this.fetch on a middguard.View instance? Will empty options work? This may be an issue with the underlying backbone.ioBind.

Yes, that's the one. Empty options works, but the fetch function tries to attach something to options before passing it along to backbone, and that is what fails. It is a simple fix, but we are coming down to crunch time, so it was just faster to put in empty options and file an issue to make sure we went back to it and fixed it later.
